Central Otago Hockey Association (COHA) is calling for more players to help boost numbers across both men's and women's teams this season.

The player shortage is present in adult teams in the district, and COHA has taken to social media to try to increase numbers.

COHA board member and competitions officer Nikki Heckler said the organisation would like to attract new players.

Goalies are needed for premier women’s teams, while the men’s team in Alexandra need players across all positions.

There are hockey clubs based in Alexandra, Cromwell, Maniototo, Matakanui, Upper Clutha and Wakatipu.

The season is fast approaching for all hockey grades - junior teams will kick off with a festival week and mini games from April 29 and then premier men and women playing their first games on May 4.

More than 80,000 people across New Zealand play hockey every year and there are 30 hockey associations around the country. There are many forms of the sport including small sticks, masters, indoor, outdoor, para-sticks and walking hockey.

Anyone interested in joining a Central Otago team this year can contact Nikki via email on [email protected] to be connected to teams needing players.
