A new group getting preschoolers outside having fun is increasing in popularity.

Cromwell First Touch Football runs a free 45 minute session for children aged one to four years old, every second and fourth Saturday of each month at Alpha St Reserve in Cromwell.

Organiser Simon Hantsche said the idea grew out of a conversation with friends about wanting his two year old son to play football with kids his own age in Cromwell.

“The goal is simple: for kids to have fun running around and socialising. [It] is not to create the next Messi or Ronaldo but just for the little ones to spend some time outside with other kids on Saturday morning instead of watching TV at home,” he said.

At the first session on December 10, Simon anticipated about ten children showing up, so he was thrilled with the turnout of 30 children.

“Response has exceeded all expectations…The big number of kids present and seeing all of them having fun together highlights the need and demand for such an event in our community,” he said.

Parents need to register their children on the Facebook group prior to each session.

Fresh air fun for families - outside and building confidence and ball skills

Children need to wear shoes, and a red or blue t-shirt depending on which group they are placed in. Balls, cones and tailored group small group exercises are all provided.

Simon said he would welcome some more support with coaching and managing, anyone keen to help can contact [email protected].

“It’s good for the kids to have some social activities outside daycare and good for parents to meet other parents.”

He is also seeking support from local businesses and funders to enable him to buy small goals and kids bibs.

“I would like to thank the Cromwell Senior Football Team for their help providing balls and other stuff and the local child care providers in Cromwell for sharing the information on the event.”

The venue is the Alpha St Reserve in Cromwell

Upcoming dates are January 14 and 28, February 11 and 25, and March 11 and 25.
