Cromwell Primary School student Isla Reid (7) had a BMX goal in mind and last weekend she smashed it.

Isla won the eight-year-old girls' class at the BMX New Zealand Nationals in Havelock North.

Mother Holly Waddell said her daughter has been determined from a young age.

“At three she was confidently zooming down the ramp at the BMX track.

“She had the goal of NZ1 in her mind, and it was outstanding to see her achieve that.”

Holly said there has been plenty of celebrating for Isla involving friends and family since the win.

“Her dad took her to the beach, [and] they had fish and chips to celebrate.

“Then we put up decorations and balloons and had her friends over, Nana and Poppa met her at the airport too, that was all a surprise for her.”

Isla has only entered one bmx competition of similar significance before when she raced in Christchurch for the South Island titles, and finished fifth against girls a year or two older than her.

Other top results from Cromwell BMX club riders were third (or NZ3) for Quinn Lindsay (12 year old girls), Liam King (13-14 year old boys), and Braden King (15-16 year old boys).

Both Charlie Leyser (14 year old boys) and Jono Hansen (12 year old boys) earned fourth (or NZ4).

In the 17-24 year old Cruiser class Hamish Earl was fifth. Eighth went to both Samuel Grubb in eight year old boys, and Jack Stanley in 16 year old boys. Lily Huband was ninth in 17-24 year old girls and Frank Waters placed 23rd in eight year old boys.

Noah Lindsay and Ben James had to support from the sidelines due to injuries, and Cooper Rushbrook participated in the six year old boys sprockets, but no places were awarded for that grade.

Club president Mouse James who travelled with the team said the kids have some amazing skills, and they were all on display over the weekend.

"It is fantastic to see the kids smashing their own personal goals, for me the overall highlight was seeing them all cheering and supporting each other. We might have been small in numbers, but we sure did make a lot of noise when our team mates were riding.

“Equally the support coming from home was astonishing, we had so many videos and messages sent in showing all the support for the kids, it was just incredible.

“None of this would be possible without the help and support the club receives from the local community and businesses, so a huge thank you to all those that have supported us this year. It means so much and brings such joy to so many it is great to be a part of.”

The Cromwell Southern BMX Series is coming up, hosted by Cromwell BMX club and spectators are welcome to support the riders and enjoy the action on April 6.

The following day, the Mainland South Region Champs are on at the same venue on Achill St.

Stay tuned for a wrap up of the Alexandra BMX club’s trip to Nationals in the coming days.
