Members of the Central community have been “amazing and leaping to help” according to the organisers of a fundraising campaign to help a two-year-old girl facing cancer treatment overseas.

Alexandra’s Mazie Dundass (2) is fighting a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer, Ependymoma.

Her initial tumour was successfully removed last year, but unfortunately it has returned and she has had a second surgery in Christchurch.

Mazie and her parents Todd and Haley will be travelling to Atlanta in the United States, to undergo a specialised radiation treatment plan.

Todd and Haley thanked the community for everything they have done for them.

“[It] is so humbling to see. We really appreciate everyone who has donated or sponsored for the quiz night. It sounds like it will be a great night,” Mazies’ parents said.

Kayla Wilson and other friends of the Dundass family have organised a fundraising quiz night complete with raffles, auctions and prizes to be held at the Alexandra District Club on March 13.

Kayla said all the tables were sold within eight hours and her inbox had been filled with messages in connection with helping the family.

The money from fundraising efforts is to cover living costs and expenses in Alexandra for 10 weeks while they are off work and in America. Mazie’s treatment and travel is funded.

Organisers are planning a public online raffle soon, with $2 tickets, which will be shared on community group social media pages.

Kayla said it was great that people and local businesses “are emailing and offering prizes.”

Paper Plus Alexandra has a donation box on the counter and there is another raffle with $10 tickets being run online on Katy B Jewellery.
