Christmas Q&As - Mayor Tamah AlleyCentral Otago mayor Tamah Alley

As 2024 wraps up we chat to Central Otago locals and newsmakers, reflecting on the year that was and what the season of Christmas means to them.

Central Otago mayor Tamah Alley

1. What has been the highlight of your year?

Becoming the mayor of the best district in NZ has been great!

2. What has been one lesson 2024 taught you?

That life can change dramatically from the start of one year to the next. As much as you can plan, it’s good to be open to opportunities that come your way. Also, a litter of 10 puppies in the middle of winter is not ideal.

3. What is something you achieved this year that you are proud of?

Another year of raising our children!

4. What has been the biggest change/challenge for you or your community this year?

The financial strain and uncertainty for many families. This was the impact we thought Covid would bring, just four years later. “Survive to 2025” became the economists mantra and I hope that 2025 does bring some relief for people. This has been a tough year to be an adult!

5. What was a moment of kindness you witnessed or experienced in your community?

There have been many warm fuzzy moments this year, but I did especially love when our tradie community banded together to help out a local mum who has been unwell.

6. What does Christmas mean to you?

Being together with the people we love and being thankful for all that we have. Sounds super cheesy I know, but we try to make Christmas about thankfulness and gratitude rather than excess. I also love the magic of Christmas and try to keep that alive for the kids, even though our Elf on the Shelf does frequently “run out of magic” and get stuck in the same spot for a few days.

7. How do you plan to celebrate Christmas/New Years this year?

Travelling to Wanganui to spend it with family who we haven’t seen in quite a long time which will be lovely.

8. What are your hopes for your community for 2025?

That everyone can feel like they lead a fulfilling life in our beautiful area, whatever that means to them. I also hope that come elections in October everyone is engaged and voting for amazing community members who will put their hands up to lead Central Otago into the future!

9. If you could give one piece of advice going in to 2025 what would it be?

Life is short, not everyone will have the privilege of making it to next Christmas. Be thankful, be kind, be your best self. Life is pretty awesome here.
