Discos, spooky tales, trick or treat antics, crafts or a light party walk; Wednesday afternoon was a busy one for Central Otago youngsters as Halloween fun came to Central.

Central Otago District Council (CODC) libraries in Cromwell and Alexandra had the decorations up and hosted local children for a Spooktacular costumes and craft event from 3.30 - 4.30pm.

Librarian/witch Shelley Ludlow entertained children in Alexandra by reading ‘There was a young zombie who swallowed a worm’.

Children got to make their own paper spiders and pumpkins during the session.

Arlo enjoyed taking part in the CODC library craft activity.

The Terrace School students Dylan, Ashleigh, Layla and Kobe went trick or treating for the first time. They prepared jokes to use as their tricks and visited Halloween friendly houses with decorations visible on their letterboxes or front doors.

Trio of boys: Alexandra Primary School students Henry, Austin and Jonas dressed up for the afternoon and hit the streets.

Poolburn School held a disco for students. Alexandra Scouts Groups’ ‘Tot’s Halloween Disco’ is on tonight, November 1, to fundraise for the annual jamboree. A gold coin donation is required.

Six churches in Alexandra ran an alternative to Halloween, a free walking Light Trail around Disney-themed locations, it also included crafts and a sausage sizzle. On a social media post the group said 350 people took part in the afternoon of non-scary fun.

Central Otago parents The Central App spoke to said the children they had seen trick or treating were respectful, especially of houses that had ‘no trick or treat’ signs up, but that the sunny hot weather meant some costumes were taken off sooner than expected.
