Two Central brothers are lining up alongside professional mountain bikers in The Prospector mountain bike stage race in two weeks time - from March 8-10.

Dunstan High School students Cam (16) and Eli Moir (13) have entered in the relay category, which means they will ride together in the prologue (day one) then split up the longer stages, each riding a section of stage one and two (day two and three).

Last year at 12, Eli was the youngest competitor, and granted a special dispensation to enter the single day race ‘Matangi Claim Adventure ride’ (the baby brother of the Prospector).

Cam said their plan was to split the bigger days to “play to our strengths”.

“Eli is lighter, therefore lighter for the uphills and I’m stronger on the downhill.”

Eli said last year's experience was awesome and he wanted to do more this year, with the new relay option helping him to get his brother on board.

“I was trying to convince my friend to do the race [too] but he sadly could not do it. [My advice is] just give it a go and don’t be afraid to lose because failure is a part of success - hard work pays off, but the main thing is to have fun.”

The pair acknowledge their home advantage and hope it will give them an edge.

“We know the tracks and are also acclimatised to the Alex region,” Cam said.

“We have been trying to ride when we can. Eli has had some setbacks such as a sprained wrist and a bash to the head after a big crash, but should survive the race.”

Cam thanked his family, Willbike Cycling Central and Matangi Station MTB for their support.
