Central Beat: Campervan narrowly avoids ending up in riverWhoopsie daisy . . . This camper almost ended up in the Manuherekia River last week. SUPPLIED

An Alexandra man lost his campervan down the bank at the end of Tarbert Street last week after leaving the handbrake off in his vehicle.

Alexandra police Senior Constable Graham Perkins said the man had pulled over to make a phone call, and when he got out to put his dog on a lead, noticed the vehicle travelling over the bank.

Contractors tried to remove it that night but it was too heavy so they had to wait until the next morning and use a crane to winch it out instead.

“There was no damage and nobody was hurt. Of course the man blames his dog,” Snr Const Perkins said.

Security fences have now been erected down the bottom of Alexandra to make it safer, and to cordon off the work being undertaken on the Riverside Park project.

Cromwell police had a messy situation to deal with regarding an international woman living in the town, who tried to evade officers when speeding along Alpha Street.

Snr Const Perkins said after the woman finally pulled over, she pretended to be in pain and said cramps were stopping her going to the toilet.

Police were suspicious of her behaviour and her resulting breath test of 600mcg confirmed she was driving while under the influence of alcohol.

The woman then urinated fully clothed and once back at the station for processing, proceeded to defecate, further soiling her clothing and the floor of the office.

Snr Const Perkins said ambulance staff were called to assist her as she continued to protest she was unwell, but once checked out medically “she came back to being completely normal and was a totally different person.”
