Christmas Q&A - Lady CromwellLady Cromwell

As 2024 wraps up we chat to Central Otago locals and newsmakers, reflecting on the year that was and what the season of Christmas means to them.

Lady Cromwell, community commentator

What is something you achieved this year that you are proud of?

Dearest reader, nothing brings me greater joy than seeing a vision come to life. This year, our cherished Memorial Hall is being transformed into what will most undoubtably be a bustling hive of gatherings and celebrations. A space that once stood forlorn is poised to once again hum with the laughter and unity of our community—a true triumph, if I may say so. And to add even greater joy will be the Museum and Art space, so desperately needed, right next to it. Now that is something to be particularly proud of.

What has been the biggest change/challenge for you or your community this year?

In the realm of challenges, none loomed larger than the spectre of rising costs—a worrisome villain that spares no one. Yet, through ingenuity and steadfast collaboration, our community continues to rise to the occasion, ensuring that no neighbour was left to face the storm alone. Truly, necessity has proven the mother of invention. It is my hope that this spirit grows in the New Year and translates to our fair Council’s important work.

What was a moment of kindness you witnessed or experienced in your community?

Even amidst trials, the human spirit finds ways to shine. Picture, if you will, a group of spirited youth gathering food provisions for families in need. When Cromwell’s beloved Community Pantry was destroyed by fire in January 2022, the response was nothing short of inspiring. Originally created by two compassionate students, with the support of their teachers and local businesses, the pantry had long been a symbol of generosity. Its destruction was met with an outpouring of support, as locals rallied with ideas, materials, and labour to rebuild it as a lasting testament to kindness and resilience. Their selflessness proved not only heartwarming but a testament to the profound compassion that thrives in our corner of the world – The pantry stands as proof at Cromwell Community House, that kindness, like the finest of threads, weaves a community together, stronger and more beautiful than before.

What does Christmas mean to you?

Christmas, my dear, is more than just glittering trees and mistletoe scandals. It is a season of gratitude, reflection, and togetherness, when hearts are warmed not just by the hot summer sun and the smell of Barbeques but by the presence of loved ones. A time, too, to extend kindness to those for whom the season may not be so merry. Christmas for me, is measured by presence not presents and, of course, an excellent excuse to indulge in mulled wine and mince pies!.

How do you plan to celebrate Christmas/New Year's this year?

This year, my Christmas will be spent at a grand luncheon, welcoming those who might otherwise dine in solitude. As for New Year’s Eve, it shall be marked with quiet reflection, familial warmth, and the setting of hopeful intentions for the year ahead. There may well be a good book and a glass of something nurtured in a barrel, because what is life without a little literary and liquid indulgence.

What are your hopes for your community for 2025?

My fondest wish for 2025 is for our community to flourish in both spirit and prosperity. May we grow ever closer, face challenges with resilience, and seize opportunities with courage and grace.

If you could give one piece of advice going into 2025, what would it be?

Kindness, dear reader, is the most fashionable accessory one can don, along with a smile. Neither cost a penny, but to the recipient they are invaluable. A simple act of compassion can ripple through the world, leaving behind a legacy far more lasting than the finest silk or the sharpest wit.

Yours ever festively,

Lady Cromwell Xx

May your Christmas be as sparkling as the finest chandelier and your New Year as full of promise as an unopened love letter.
