Central’s Ice Fernz Rikki-Lee McLean and Rina Watt won bronze medals in the 2023 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Women's World Ice Hockey Championship Division II Group B in Cape Town.
The Ice Fernz came close to thwarting winning team Belgium’s progress after a 2-1 lead in the first period of their match up.
Belgium scored twice in the middle section of the game to win 4-2. They then went on to earn gold, unbeaten in all their games.
Australia beat the Ice Fernz in their final game by five goals to two, to win the silver.

The Ice Fernz had two wins in the tournament against Croatia (15-1) and South Africa (5-1).
Maniototo’s Rina Watt was in isolation with Covid-19 and unable to play in the first two games.
She said it was an epic feeling to be able to get on the ice for the final two games.
“Putting on the jersey, representing New Zealand, and playing alongside my amazing teammates was an absolute privilege.
“Roller coaster of a ride but our incredible management team, coaches, and physio got us all through.”
The tournament was played at Cape Town’s Ice Station and five teams (Australia, Belgium, Croatia, New Zealand and South Africa) participated.
The team’s result is consistent with their showing in the last World Championships in Iceland in 2020 where they came third.
The White Ferns (New Zealand Women’s cricket team) supported the team for their first game against Croatia on February 20
