Bright mural taking shape on Alexandra’s main street The completed mural, another eye-catching feature on Alexandra’s Centennial Avenue

Not for profit organisation Keep Alexandra Clyde Beautiful (KACB) has enlisted Cromwell artist Jordan Turner to beautify a grey concrete plaster wall on Alexandra’s main street.

The wall, outside The Bakery at 82 Centennial Avenue, features bright triangles and geometric shapes and a message to ‘Keep Central Otago Beautiful’.

Over the past few days passers by may have seen Jordan putting on the finishing touches.

Work on painting the mural kicked off just prior to the Blossom Festival on September 22 after winter rain delayed the start.

The environmentally themed mural was entered in Resene’s Nature Mural competition. It did not win but KACB liaised with Keep New Zealand Beautiful and approved funding for Jordan to complete her biggest mural ever, 3.5m high.

KACB’s mural convenor Ann Wills then approached local businesses and building owners and The Bakery came on board.

Each season of Central Otago and the local environment is represented on the wall, including, mandalas, water activity, birdlife, flora and fauna, native butterflies and lizards.

The stars represent the ‘big sky’ above, and the ribbon, the Mata-au river. Glow paint has been used on the stars to add extra visual appeal in the evenings.

Scaffolding was hired for seven days to allow Jordan to paint the highest sections

Jordan has art on display at Central Stories art gallery and museum, including mixed media “Dignity”.

Dignity is 102cm x 76cm. Jordan said on her instagram “let’s paint the world a brighter place”

She said the piece is about you being worthy of being at the table, no matter your story.

People may recognise her vibrant style as she has done cabinet art in Central previously.

Jordan has worked in events doing body paint and make up in Melbourne after studying Makeup and Film Production at the Design and Art College of New Zealand.
