As a precaution, the Central Otago District Council (CODC) has issued a Boil Water Notice for Patearoa in the Māniatoto.
A CODC spokesperson said the Patearoa water treatment plant is operating normally but is having issues maintaining a stable chlorine level.
“We are operating at a safe chlorine level at this stage, but the water team is working to identify what is causing the fluctuating levels.”
The Boil Water Notice is being implemented to ensure safe water for the community while CODC staff work to fix the problem.
The spokesperson said Patearoa residents must boil ALL water used for drinking, washing, preparing food, preparing baby formula and cleaning teeth.
A water tanker for drinking water is located at the Patearoa pub.
