A new $5,000 scholarship is being offered to an emerging artist by the long-standing Central Otago Art Society.

Formed in the 1970s, the society has a strong membership of around 100 members and is now in a financial position to be able to offer funding to help an up and coming artist.

The funding will support the professional development of a promising visual artist connected to the Central Otago region.

The recipient, who will be announced during opening night of the Alexandra Blossom Festival exhibition at the end of September 2025, will be expected to exhibit at the flagship awards in 2026.

“We felt that we should introduce a scholarship to help facilitate the next stage in an emerging artist’s journey—whether that’s further study, new creative work, or professional development—and the arts society plays a valuable role in both art education and exhibition,” Central Otago District Arts Trust coordinator Rebekah de Jong said.

The initiative recognises the vital role the arts played in shaping the region’s identity and aims to nurture early-career creatives by helping them access mentorship, materials, studio space, courses, or exhibition opportunities.

Open to all visual artists in the first five years of their practice who show commitment, potential, and originality, the scholarship isn't just aimed at young people, COAS chair Nigel Wilson said.

“It could be a 70-year-old that’s emerging,” he said.

Selection will be based on artistic merit, development potential, and contribution to the cultural life of Central Otago.

“We are looking for someone who is passionate about the arts and genuinely wants to move their practice to the next level,” scholarship coordinator Katie Robinson said.

The scholarship marks an important investment in the region’s creative future and reinforces the Central Otago Art Society’s dedication to growing a thriving arts community.

Visual artists incorporate a range of genres from photography to sculpture and printmaking.

The arts society is looking forward to this year’s Blossom Festival where guest artist Julie Greig will be the guest exhibitor and judge, with this year’s theme being ‘Black and White.'

Applications for the Emerging Artist Scholarship close on August 22. For more information email: [email protected]
