A mixed bag of weather was no match for the 36 teams who battled it out on the football field in Alexandra last weekend.

Thirty six teams from across the Southern district played a seven-a-side tournament in rain, wind and sunshine on October 14 and 15.

Molyneux Park had eight pitches marked out, and gazebos and tents were set up for teams and supporters to shelter in and relax between the 25 minute long games.

The two-day tournament has been held in Alexandra for many years and cash prizes went to the winning teams.

First prize of $600 for the men’s grade went to Wānaka, second place was Queenstown. The women’s grade was won by Wānaka, and they took home $450. They triumphed over University Gold in the final three goals to one.

Cromwell Women's team bolstered with a few Alexandra players, they lost their semi final against the runners up University Gold. A spokesperson for the team said they had a great weekend, with lots of laughs and some great moments of football.

The tournament had an international flavour, with an Alexandra-based team made up of recognised seasonal employees (RSE) from Vanuatu taking part, and players from South America, Great Britain and Europe in several other teams.

Teams were from Gore, Dunedin, Queenstown, Wānaka and Central Otago. Rolling substitutions were utilised by most teams and the pace of play was fast due to damp grass and gusting winds.

Dunstan High School also entered a women’s team.

Conditions were mixed with some short lived sunshine on Saturday, followed by rain and strong winds, before play finished at 4.30pm.

Games kicked off at 9.30am on both days, with the quarters and semis and finals held on Sunday. Players The Central App spoke to thanked referees, coaches, managers, and local sponsors for a great tournament.
