The 50 (Alexandra) Squadron has continued to experience strong growth with 35 cadets currently enrolled - but there is still room to grow.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary last year, anyone interested in learning more about what they do were invited to an open night at the Clyde Memorial Hall this Thursday.

Let by unit commander Jill Checketts, the cadets came from all over Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes, and open to those aged 13-18.

Parent Support Committee chair Vanessa Hammond said there were plenty of carpooling options, with many families coming from Hawea, Wanaka, Cromwell and Queenstown.

“It’s a great way for young people to make friends with like-minded others across the district. The group is very welcoming and there is a strong sense of camaraderie. They learn really valuable life skills in a supportive environment,” she said.

The activities taught each term followed the New Zealand Cadet Force Training Program and planned with the intention of building healthy young people.

There were camps and cadets took part in community service events such as Anzac Day and Poppy Day, as well as other activities such as outdoor survival training and flying the Cessna at Alexandra Airport.

The programme blended practical knowledge with real world experience, both in the classroom and in the field.

The Air Training Corps (ATC) was the aviation arm of the NZ Cadet Force (NZCF) and aligned with the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF).

Formed in September 1941 originally for the purpose of training young pilots ready for active service, there were currently 49 ATC Squadrons located throughout New Zealand.

These squadrons have a vision to foster the spirit of adventure and teamwork and to develop those qualities essential for good citizens and leaders.
