Snowfall across roads and highways has prompted warnings for drivers to take extra care today, with additional concern for farmers in the midst of lambing and calving.

Heavy snow has been reported from Alexandra through to Kyeburn along State Highway 85, and on State Highway 8 from Alexandra to Roxburgh.

Motorists are being reminded to drive to the conditions and watch for road-clearing crews.

“Please slow down and survive,” a Fulton Hogan spokesperson said. “Keep an eye out for our teams who are working to keep roads passable and safe.”

The snowy conditions appear to be the result of weather fronts arriving later than originally forecast.

The unexpected cold snap is creating added stress for farmers as many are navigating the critical spring season of lambing and calving.

“Snow like this can have a devastating impact on young stock if they aren’t properly sheltered,” a local farmer said. “We’ll do our best, but it adds a lot of stress.”

MetService's seven day outlook shows mixed conditions ahead for Central Otago.

Authorities are asking drivers to plan for delays and check road conditions before heading out.
