A glimpse of pioneering lifeVallance Cottage once housed a family of ten

Two busy days are coming up for Alexandra’s heritage listed Vallance Cottage with opportunities to learn about its mud brick restoration and colourful past.

The cottage is the start and finish point of a Sustainable House Tour on Saturday (October 22).

It is a ticketed event ($20) and proceeds go towards the continued restoration of the cottage.

Four different sustainable builds covering various elements of sustainability will make up the tour from 9.30am - 12.30pm.

The following day the historic cottage is opening its doors for locals to take a tour and learn about pioneering life from 10am - 2pm.

The cottage was built in the late 1880s by goldminer and shepherd William Vallance for his wife and eight children.

Volunteers on the cottage’s working group will be on hand to talk about its past, present and future.

Plans have been made to grow the interactive aspects of the cottage for visitors.

Central Otago District Council (CODC) has a section of its website where people can upload files detailing recollections, memories or photos directly to the working group for their consideration.

People can contribute by going onto the CODC webpage (under Upload files – Vallance Cottage), and then selecting the topic that fits best with their information, photo or story.
