Tarras Cemetery

Tarras Cemetery

Cemetery Road, Tarras

Set in the heart of merino sheep country is the thriving farming community of Tarras, at the head of the Cromwell Valley. Located on Cemetery Road, which comes off Ardgour Road, is the Tarras Cemetery. Bordered by mature trees, the cemetery is thought to date back to the 1880s when this area was a thriving gold mining settlement with its notable towns of Bendigo, Welshtown and claims in the Lindis Pass.

Tarras cemetery is still in use today. Of significance are the old fashioned roses planted by the early pioneers inside the gate. These were part of the Joy Chapman's preservation of roses brought out by early miners' wives as cuttings placed in potatoes to keep these moist and fed. The collection won a world wide rose award. There is a plaque recording these goldfields heritage roses.

Tarras Cemetery is administered and maintained by the Tarras Cemetery Trust. All burials and records are managed by the Trust.
