A women’s Sunday social soccer league has started in Central and women of all ages and skill levels are welcome.
Organisers are hoping to involve players from across the district to grow the sport as a whole.
For the inaugural game almost 30 women met in Wānaka with ages ranging from high school students, to younger women in their 20s, mums and grandmothers getting involved.
It was a multicultural game, with an emphasis on enjoyment, as players from Mexico, the United States, Argentina, Spain as well as New Zealanders and Australians took part.
Some had never played in an eleven-a-side game previously, or with proper goals, nets and a referee.
The women’s draw is planned to follow the junior football rotation, which moves between the four clubs every Sunday (Wānaka, Cromwell, Queenstown and Alexandra.)
The next game is on Sunday, May 5, 3pm at Cromwell’s Anderson Park.
To join in you need boots, shinpads, a water bottle and a good sense of fun.
There are women’s squads regularly training in Alexandra and Cromwell, with the support of the Alexandra United Football Club and Cromwell Football Club.
