Police have issued a warning to the community after what it describes as “serious incidents” related to the drug MDMA.

Over the past weekend security guards in Queenstown assisted two people who had seizures after reportedly taking MDMA and a 20-year-old Canterbury man died from what police say looks like a potential drug overdose.

“We are issuing a warning to our communities after the tragic death of a Canterbury man over the weekend and two other serious incidents in Queenstown,” detective senior sergeant Malcolm Inglis said.

“The best thing people can do to prevent any risk, is not to take illicit drugs.”

Police have issued the warning just as the Snow Machine Festival takes place in Queenstown from today (Thursday September 8).

“Police strongly recommend people take extreme care as what they think they may be taking may in fact be a completely different drug or substance,” Malcolm said.

“We don’t want to see anyone becoming sick or worse.”

Police have arrested and charged two people, a male and female, both aged 33, with possession for supply of a Class B drug and the possibility of more serious charges. They are expected to appear in the Christchurch District Court today.
