Volunteering opportunities in the spotlightOften the simplest things can make a difference in our community, and in someone’s life. An upcoming expo aims to promote the value of volunteering.

There is an opportunity coming up for people to get involved in supporting their communities, in ways that align with interests and passions.

The Alexandra Volunteer Expo and Celebration is all about community groups and organisations being able to meet face to face and have an informal chat with potential volunteers.

The expo and celebration of all things volunteering has been made possible by a partnership between Alexandra Community House and Volunteer South-Central Lakes.

There are many ways to volunteer and make a difference in someone’s life.

“Volunteering is a great way for people to participate in their community in a meaningful way with a whole host of benefits and we are keen to showcase not only the organisations that are based at Alexandra Community House, but also the many others that involve volunteers in the community that are keen to recruit volunteers.”

“We want to give people the opportunity to pop along for a chat face to face with those directly responsible for recruiting volunteers, and to find out more about how they can make a positive difference to their community.” says Carole Gillions, Manager at ACH.

Carole says the expo will provide space for organisations to talk to people, so anyone keen to promote their roles to a new audience are invited to come along.

There is no cost to attend and all information will be collated before the event and given to volunteers to take away for future browsing and reference.

Organisers say they hope to attract a range of organisations. Those already signed up include Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery, Family Works Buddy Programme, Central Otago Friendship Network, The Life Education Trust, Central Otago Budgeting Services and Keep Alexandra and Clyde Beautiful Group.

“We’re also inviting anyone who volunteers to join us for a drink, some refreshments and to enjoy some social chat with other inspiring people who make a difference through volunteering in their community.

“Volunteering really enables people to participate in and connect with others in their communities so why not come along and take the first step to volunteering.” says Volunteer South’s Gillian White.

The expo and celebration will take place at Alexandra Community House on April 13th between 4-6pm and everyone involved in or considering volunteering is welcome - all ages, ethnicities and backgrounds.

“Whoever you are, wherever you’re from and whatever your circumstances, there will be a role for you out there.”
