Triumphant after some hard-fought wins, Alexandra’s Men’s and Cromwell women’s E grade squash teams have won the district championships, qualifying to represent Otago at the Super Champ Nationals in September.

Alexandra Club men’s captain and E grade team manager Emmet Sparrow said there were a few tubes of deep heat used on achy muscles, but overall, some brilliant games of squash were played.

The Alexandra men battled other clubs from Omakau, Wānaka, Pirates of Dunedin and Otago; while Cromwell’s E grade women were up against Alexandra and the Pirates.

The Cromwell women’s E grade team who will also play in the Super Champs tournament in Alexandra.

Last weekend the Otago district eliminations determined the district champion for each grade.

The district champion is eligible to travel to the National Super champs to play off for the national title.

The Omakau men’s E grade team placed second and Wānaka came in third. Alexandra’s E grade women’s team came second.

Alexandra Squash club will host the E grade Super Champs over four days from September 21-24.

This promises to bring approximately 100 squash players (from across New Zealand’s 11 squash districts) to Central to take part and enjoy the club’s hospitality.

“We’re really looking forward to the Super Champs event for E grade. Last year our turn to host C grade nationals was cancelled due to Covid-19… so this should be good,” Emmett said.

This afternoon some Central squash players are travelling to Invercargill for the Southland Squash open which doubles as the South Island Individual Champs.

There are 200 matches across 16 divisions to be played on Friday and Saturday (July 8-9).

There is also an Omakau squash tournament next weekend (July 15-16) For more information email [email protected].
