Sumamry:

  • Driving in NZ (NZTA road code, driving licenses)
  • Buying a Car (consumer rights and hire purchase tips)
  • Public Transport Options

All children travelling in a car must be in a child restraint (car seat) until at least their 7th birthday.

Drive on the left-hand side of the road.

You can drive with an international driver license or permit for up to 12 months, after which you will need to get a NZ driver license. The road rules are explained in the Road Code which is available (at the library?), online at www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/raodcode or you can buy it at most bookshops (Paperplus/Warehouse)

Getting a driving licence –

information on getting a NZ driver license can be found the NZ Transport Agency website: www.nzta.govt.nz/license

Buying a car:

For all official information on owning and driving a car in NZ, search the NZTA website with the keyword: vehicle www.nzta.govt.nz

Be careful if you buy a car on ‘hire purchase’. Seek advice. For more information on consumer rights see www.consumeraffairs.govt.nz
