It is ‘the month of the mo’ to raise awareness for men’s health, and this year Central locals are moving for Movember.

The charity is urging ‘the order of mo’ to remember the 60 men suicide takes globally, every hour, by walking or running 60km over the month.

Alexandra’s Elaisa Chapman has adapted this to hike to the number six on Alexandra’s clock 60 times in November.

She said her campaign was for all the dads, brothers, sons and mates in our lives; to get them having important conversations.

“If I can climb a small hill 60 times I hope it will go a small way to helping our men who find themselves climbing mountains to conquer them. The world is a better place with them in it.

“I ask men, of all ages, to catch up with one another over coffee, a beer, a meal, hit a golf ball, pass a ball . . . whatever.

“It's the ones that seem okay from the outside that can be struggling. Talk about the good stuff that's happening but also talk about what is not quite working out, or going as planned.”

Elaisa said running is usually her thing, but 60km for the month was too easy, and 60km a week was too big.

“I wanted to do something a bit cool and there's nothing more iconic in Alexandra than the clock.”

She has to make the climb twice a day on average, but as she did not register on the Movember site until the third of the month she’s catching up from starting a few days late.

Travelling for work as a sales representative and other weekends away from home mean she has planned to climb to the clock at least four times on the remaining days.

She’s close to her fundraising target of $600, with $470 raised so far and more than 28 climbs completed.

Elaisa said anyone wanting to join her could just come along to show their support.

“It's an achievable climb as it takes about 12-15 minutes per up and down and company is always welcomed. Tuesday 6pm and Friday 6am are locked in times but [personal message me] and I'll let people know what other days I'll do it.”

Many upper lips in Central are adorned, styled or feeling scratchy at the Movember halfway point, as Central individuals and businesses are involved this year, including Fulton Hogan, NRG and Naylor Love.

Movember, the men’s health charity began in 2003 and has since funded over 1320 men’s health projects around the world.

Three of the biggest issues affecting men are key for Movember; mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.
