Central Otago looks set to experience a week of showers, heat and humidity in weather, according to MetService.

It's the unpredictable mid-spring, but there is always plenty to do in the garden. Spring crops and flowers will be starting to appear so keep planting more for a continuous supply that will last you throughout summer. Weeds also thrive at this time of year, so cover bare soil with material such as bark or pea straw, to keep the weeds at bay.

It's the time of the year we enjoy seeing our Daffodils bloom and lambs playing during our country drives. It is also the time for some unpredictable weather.

When asked what to expect this week for Central Otago, Cromwell-raised MetService meteorologist Lewis Ferris says, "this week in one word, muggy".

"Aotearoa will be living up to it’s namesake this week and it’s no different for Central Otago. Expect plenty of cloud cover, relatively windless days, warm temperatures and plenty of humidity – even into the afternoons.

"The wet weather tends to remain close by but never really eventuates to anything significant (most places will see less than 15mm of rain before the end of Saturday).

"It’s one of those weeks where it is worth checking the forecast in the morning to see if you can find a dry time to get out for some fresh air – especially important for those dealing with school holidays".

Central Otago will feature mostly scattered showers along with sunny dry periods.

Lewis says  "Highs around 20C are forecast throughout the week, even with a break in the clouds you’ll notice the humidity during the afternoons. This heat and humidity is fuel for afternoon showers which will usually form around the ranges but could drift over your place,"

On a positive, the soil is warming up and we are told the best crops to plant this month include peas, beans, potatoes, beetroot, capsicum, salad greens, chillies and herbs.

Labour weekend in October is also the traditional tomato planting time for a summer harvest. Keep all your vegetable plants health with fertiliser and regular watering around the root zone.

Enjoy the sunshine, rain and remember to get outdoors to either garden, walk dogs, or play with the kids while on school holidays.

In brief, just experience and embrace it all this week.
