Gale force winds, rain, sunshine and possibly snow, all make it into this week’s forecast for Central Otago as spring makes itself known.

Cromwell-raised MetService meteorologist Lewis Ferris says the changeable spring conditions will include strong winds.

“This is looking like a classic spring week, very fast moving weather systems so weather conditions are likely to change a lot through the days,” Lewis says.

“Central Otago is currently under a Strong Wind Warning for northwesterly winds gusting up to 120kmph in exposed areas.

“While the wind wont be as strong in urban areas the odd gust can easily throw around things in your yard.

“The warning wraps up at 11pm today (Monday).”

Central Otago is in for rain, wind and possible snow this week, according to MetService.

On Tuesday, MetService forecast for rain clearing in the morning, but showers developing in the evening, with light winds.

“The first period of rain is likely to start later on today (Monday), easing on Tuesday but showers hang around into Wednesday as the cool air arrives on a southwesterly wind,” Lewis says.

“This brings the potential for showers of snow down to 300m and a daytime maximum temperature of less than 10C.”

“More rain and gusty northwesterly winds are on the cards for Thursday but Friday shows an easing trend.

“A very good week to stay up with the current forecasts.”

For the weekend, Saturday looks fine with northwesterlies, while Sunday will include rain and light winds.
