Monday has started with wet weather but it won’t last too long, according to MetService.
Cromwell-raised MetService Meteorologist Lewis Ferris says the story for this week will go from wet to dry.
“A frontal system and associated rainband move over Central Otago today with southwesterly winds bringing a few more showers to the region into Tuesday,” he says.
“The influx of cooler air from the south also brings about a small risk of frost for some parts of the region on Wednesday and Thursday mornings.”
Central Otago will experience a wet start to the week, which will likely give way to a patch of settled weather from Wednesday.
Lewis says the forecast of single digits close to 4C is likely to mean frosts for nearby areas.
“Now that we’re getting closer to the cooler months it’s worth remembering that a forecast temperature of 4C is a good proxy for the possibility of a ground frost.
“This is because the forecast temperature is for around 1.4m above the ground and overnight the surface will tend to be colder than the air above the surface – especially when the sky is cloud free and there’s a lack of wind.”
From midweek, Lewis says the story will change, as a settled front of weather passes through.
“From Wednesday onwards the weather looks to calm down and the information currently available is hinting at seven consecutive days of settled weather!
“While this means that we’re not expecting any widespread rain or strong winds you’re still best to keep up with the most recent forecasts.”
