The week’s weather Changeable conditions are forecast for Central Otago this week, according to MetService.

The changeable weather which has typified Central Otago this year looks set to continue, according to MetService.

Cromwell-raised MetService Meteorologist Lewis Ferris says last week’s settled sunshine won’t feature this week, as cool and gusty weather moves in.

“Last week was very settled thanks to the presence of a high pressure system, this has moved away to the east and now a region of low pressure is ruling the weather pattern,” Lewis says.

“Most days last week saw the temperature approach 30ºC while this week looks to remain around/below the 20ºC mark.”

Central Otago is in for a changeable week of weather, according to MetService.

Lewis says northwesterly winds will feature, with strong gusts, while rain and storms also feature on the forecast.

“Winds from the northwest quarter look to be pretty strong and gusty (especially about elevated areas) through into midweek,” he says.

“A few bands of rain are forecast to pass over the region through the beginning of the week – these bring with them a moderate risk of thunderstorms both Monday and Tuesday afternoons.

“While the heaviest showers are likely isolated they also bring with them a risk of hail.”

A midweek change looks to bring a period of sunshine to the tail-end of the week, while the weekend could feature more rain and stormy weather.

“Wednesday also has a period of wet weather in store but Thursday and Friday look dry before another weak front passes over on Saturday.

“In short this week looks to run cooler than average and there are plenty of features to pass over in the first half of the week, bringing rain and wind, you may even see some snow on the higher peaks (above 1000m).”
