The Central App welcomes new cadetsCadets Nia Du Plessis and Emily Attfield have joined the Central App reporting team

Two local year 13 students will join the Central App in the New Year to gain experience in journalism and bring a youth perspective to local news.

Emily Attfield and Nia Du Plessis, the successful candidates, are excited to gain work experience within local media.

“I thought it would be interesting to get an insight into the media industry, and to listen to people’s stories in the community,” Emily said.

Both cadets are keen to explore journalism as a career option.

“I want to learn as much as I possibly can,” Nia said.

The Central App owner Vicki McLean is thrilled to have them on board.

“All the applicants were of such high calibre – I’m very impressed with the young talent we have in the area. It’s great to be able to nurture Emily and Nia as they explore career options.”

The two young reporters bring varied perspectives to their roles.

Nia is based in Omakau and lives and works on a dairy farm. With interest in music, writing, horses, karate and the outdoors in general, she is hoping to deliver a rural youth perspective to issues.

“I did three hours of fencing before I came to this interview,” Nia said.

Emily is born and bred in Alexandra and her family has deep roots in the Central district. Her areas of interest include politics, business, economics, cooking and community service.

“I enjoy stressing myself out and having lots to do,” she said.

Their positions are funded by NZ on Air as part of a programme that invests in media industry development. Both are grateful for the opportunity and “glad to be here”.

They are hoping for a successful year as part of the programme so that it will continue to be offered to students that come behind them.

Please keep an eye out for the young reporters out and about in the community and support them in their new roles.
