It can feel like roadworks and delays, along with accident numbers and fatalities on Central’s roads are increasing, and with winter driving season near drivers are urged to take care and build in extra time.

The Central App team has been leaving a bit earlier to get around the district for meetings and events.

Director Vicki McLean said referring to the Roads reports before travel was a habit for her and many in Central.

“With a long weekend ahead for Otago anniversary, factor in extra time if you’re travelling - it’s better to be safe, slow and take plenty of breaks to enjoy the scenery.

“Currently there is a 15 min possible delays Monday to Friday between Clyde and Cromwell for bench clearing and a stop/go for pavement repairs at Gorge Creek and a detour on the Ida Valley - Omakau Rd. The best idea is to plan your journey early so you know what you might encounter on the roads.”

App figures show 4.4K views on Roads from December to March. During last winter the week of June 10-17 alone had 1.7K views.

"We check with our sources daily and update as any changes come in as that is what our readers request, our facts are checked before posting as we know locals want accurate information"

Central Otago District Council infrastructure manager Quinton Penniall said re-seals for the year have been completed and there was not a run on roadworks.

“We are just finishing up re-metalling for the season. These works are driven by the time of the year, not finishing up budget spend.”

Tima Burn Rd in Teviot is one of the latest closures to be notified by CODC.

An emergency closure to repair a culvert on Tima Burn Rd will be in place from March 31 until April 17 due to damage from a flooding event. The closure runs Minzion Rd to house number 608 and a detour is in place via Three Brothers Rd and Lake Onslow Rd.

Driving to the conditions means making the right choices to stay safe on our roads.
