The traditional summer peak in tourism has brought strong visitor numbers to Central’s campsites, lakes, hospitality businesses, trails and experiences according to Tourism Central Otago (TCO) head of destination Anthony Longman.
“While predominantly a domestic market we have heard that a mix of internationals have been coming through the district visiting our [attractions]. Highlands in Cromwell had their busiest day ever over the holiday break.
“From Naseby to the Teviot Valley, visitor numbers have been strong…Roxburgh i-site has reported daily numbers up on last year and a lot of motorhomes around earlier than usual,” Anthony said.

Events such as the Cromwell Summer Series, Cromwell Wine & Food Festival and Omakau Trots have been successful, he said.
Momentum continues with more coming up including motorsport, speedway, the Cromwell Classic Car show and the Central Otago Winegrowers ROAM Central event.
“Operators are reporting strong bookings across all the cycle trails and events including the NZ Bowls Nationals in Alexandra, the return of the Crankworx Summer Series and the Prospector MTB race and iconic Cavalcade finishing in Millers Flat,” Anthony said.
Tourism minister Stuart Nash estimated that half a million international visitors would arrive over the summer period, with an associated boost expected for tourism spending.
Stuart Nash said spending by international tourists increased 30.6 percent in the year to March 2022, and with the borders fully open he was expecting another large jump by year end March 2023.
Stuart said he also expected an increase into the coming year of the number of people directly employed in tourism after more than 20,000 working holiday visa holders arrived in the country.
