Central Otago locals and visitors can get a taste of the Eden Hore Central Otago collection by checking out a photographic exhibition touring the district this summer.

Central Otago District Council has planned a series of pop-up community displays featuring limited-edition photographs of the high fashion garments.

In late 2019 a group of internationally acclaimed fashion industry professionals, led by renowned photographer Derek Henderson, created a series of photographs of Eden Hore’s most glamorous gowns shot in stunning Central Otago landscapes. 

The photographs are testament to the collaborative efforts of many helpers, fashion curators and textile conservation specialists, all drawn by the mystique of the Eden Hore Central Otago collection. 

This photography project was developed in partnership with the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa and Central Otago District Council.

The local displays will run at the same time as a summer exhibition “Eden Hore High Fashion / High Country” is running at The Dowse Art Museum in Lower Hutt as part of the leading contemporary art gallery’s 50th anniversary programme.  

Central Otago Mayor Tim Cadogan, who chairs the Eden Hore Central Otago Steering Group, encourages the community to get along to one of the summer displays.

“These photographs are an incredible addition to the Eden Hore Central Otago Collection that is owned by the Council on behalf of the Central Otago community.  

“Derek has captured the stunning presence of these iconic clothing items in the majesty that is the Central Otago landscape in a way few others can.  

“I have seen these photographs a number of times now and they still draw me in to their presence. I can’t wait to see them come home, in a sense, to Naseby.”

The Eden Hore Central Otago Journey to date event, attended by about 85 invited guests, was held at the Orchard Garden in Alexandra in November. 

The Central App’s Managing Director Vicki McLean was a guest on the night and says the collection showcases all that is great about Central Otago.

"I remember this collection as a kid and admired it then. To see what the steering group has accomplished to honor Eden Hore was goosebump material.

“What a night / what a stunning collection and presentation - the photography just brings our region and collection to life in such a unique way.  

“Made me feel so proud to live in this beautiful place. We are blessed."

The first display is scheduled to take place in Naseby at the Maniototo Early Settlers Museum Inc Jubilee Building from 28 December to 10 January and then over to Central Stories Museum in Alexandra from 15 January to 19 February. 

Following that the intention is to take the exhibition to both the Cromwell and the Teviot Valley wards.
