Snow is falling across parts of the South Island, prompting travel warnings for several inland highways in Central Otago and Canterbury.
New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) has issued area-specific alerts for the following routes:
NZTA says crews are actively monitoring and responding to conditions, with snow and sleet creating hazardous driving conditions in higher areas.
MetService has also placed snowfall warnings across South Island alpine passes, advising caution for those travelling over the next few days.
Motorists are encouraged to drive to the conditions: reduce speed, increase following distances, and avoid sudden braking or turning.
“Visibility is key — please keep your lights on and ensure your vehicle is safe for winter driving,” said an NZTA spokesperson.
Frost, sleet and snow are expected to continue intermittently across inland routes.
Travellers should plan ahead using the NZTA Journey Planner and check for live updates.
