Smoke floating through the air in Galloway

The Galloway Gang was out in force near Alexandra this weekend, smoke floating through the air as Prairie Dog, Nightshooter and Big Bad John shot their pistols.

No, it wasn’t a movie set – it was a Cowboy Action Shooting competition held at Central Otago Pistol Club, with more than 30 shooters from around the country battling it out in several events.

Entrants donned western dress and adopted their cowboy (and cowgirl) aliases as they tested their skills with pre 1900 designed guns, including single action revolvers, a lever action rifle, and a side-by-side shotgu

The cold didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits and in fact added to the atmosphere, with cowboys warming themselves by the brazier when not shooting at targets.

Only the safety goggles and earmuffs, and the odd cell phone, let you know it wasn’t the 1890s.

“It’s an activity that brings all walks of life together in a fun and safe environment,” said Prairie Dog, originally from Taupo. “We get grandad, mum and dad and the kids all participating.

“There’s around 600 registered Cowboy Action shooters in NZ and everyone competes within their own age group.” Sylkie, Prairie Dog’s wife, resisted joining in with her husband’s hobby until a couple of years ago. “Now I’m hooked!”

Events are timed with penalties given for various infractions, and scores improved by accuracy.

Period dress is part of the competition requirement, and most cowboys import western regalia in from overseas though they can buy the necessary gun types within NZ.

Local shooter Scouter stressed the sport’s social side but also its accessibility.

“You compete against people with similar fitness levels and we can accommodate people with limited movement by having them shoot from a chair.”

Lindis Ranger, an ex rodeo competitor who turned to Cowboy Action shooting after injury, emphasised the family friendly nature and safety of the category.

“It’s like an extended family. We all enjoy getting together and having a yarn while testing our skills.”

The 13-year-old 'Milky Bar Kid', the youngest competitor on the weekend, was brought into the sport by his father 'Darc Horse' and would like to see more youngsters involved.

To that end, The Galloway Gang is hosting an open day for people interested in learning more on Saturday 16 July.

“Yes,” says Scouter. “You will get to shoot some guns.”
