Central Otago REAP and Pasifika Central Otago brought a little bit of the islands to Alexandra with a cultural dance class and afternoon tea on Thursday (August 10).

Leis (flower garlands) and lavalavas (wrap around cloth tied into a skirt) were available to borrow, enabling participants to embrace the colourful Pasifika style.

Participants who wanted to take a seat, as opposed to stand and dance, were encouraged to also enjoy “the smiling Pasifika way to sway”.

There were smiles and toe-tapping while learning the Pasifika dances.

Central Otago District Council (CODC) Welcoming Communities officer Heather Harries and Central Otago REAP choices tutor Emma McLean attended along with other residents.

Organisers thanked members of the local Pasifika community for assisting with teaching dancing, and preparing the afternoon tea of cassava cakes, coconut buns and chocolate fried buns.

There was a warm welcome for all attendees.

Three dances, the story behind the moves, and their meaning was shared by Meraine and Kusitina.

The free event was held at St Enochs Church Lounge from 1 - 3pm.
