Work is finally underway on renovating the old Cromwell Scout den after many years in the planning.
The run-down and outdated facility was being upgraded by the Cromwell Menz Shed and other local tradies, after a huge fundraising effort from the community.
The Cromwell Lions managed to raise $28,000 towards the project from its recent 37th annual Golden Golf Charity tournament.
The Scouts also fundraised $20,000 of the $126,000 project themselves.
Cromwell Scouts leader Robyn Mexted offered a huge thank you to Cromwell Lions for an amazing effort on behalf of the 80 group members.
“It was so good to see the community supporting the community. We as a group are incredibly grateful for all the long hours that Cromwell Lions have put in. We are very excited about the refurbished den.”
The number of scout members is growing fast - having increased from 55 to 80 in recent years, and made up of boys and girls, ranging in age from 5-17, along with 12 adult members, who were either leaders or group associates.
The group was at capacity and had a waiting list of families to get in - with the exception of parents willing to roll up their sleeves and become a leader.
Robyn said not being able to repair and refurbish the den for several years had meant some group activities had been hampered by its condition.
The comprehensive renovation project aimed to modernise the building, enhance safety and improve accessibility, while preserving the den’s valued heritage.
Cromwell Lions Club president Chris Mann offered his sincere thanks to all those that supported the charity golf tournament.
“The success of this event has exceeded all expectations and illustrates the benefits of small-town organisations combining their skills and contacts to achieve a common goal.
‘’I can announce that through the generosity of the local trades community with their time and product, along with support from the Cromwell Menz Shed, the first stage of the Scout Den refurbishment project will be completed early 2025.”
