The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has accepted Santana Minerals’ Fast-track Approvals application, advancing a major mining project in Central Otago.

The acceptance confirms the company’s application for the Bendigo–Ophir Gold Project meets all the formal requirements under the new Fast-track Approvals Act and will now proceed to the assessment stage.

Santana Minerals has invested more than $8 million in scientific and environmental studies to support the application. These include water and air quality monitoring, ecological assessments, and

geotechnical investigations across the Bendigo area.

Chief executive Damian Spring said the milestone is the result of years of work.

“We’ve taken a careful and thorough approach in preparing our Fast-track Application, ensuring it aligns closely with the EPA’s procedural requirements,” he said. “While it’s not uncommon for applications to go through resubmission, we’re pleased with how our submission has progressed, a reflection of the effort and diligence behind it.”

At the heart of the proposal is the Rise and Shine deposit, considered the largest gold discovery in New Zealand in over four decades. Recent drilling indicates the deposit may extend further north, increasing its potential size.

“The 9,400-page submission reflects how seriously we’ve taken our responsibility to understand the environment, geology, and community needs,” Damian said.

The application will now undergo standard Section 30 checks to ensure it meets all processing requirements under the Fast-track Consenting Act before it can be referred to a panel for formal consideration.

“Fast-track is ultimately a test of national benefit,” Damian said. “We’ll continue to keep the community and our shareholders informed through each step of the process.”

If approved, construction on the Bendigo–Ophir project could begin by mid 2026.
