Rotary Book Sale flips pages The Annual Summer Rotary Book Sale provided plenty of books and funding for the year ahead.

Alexandra’s annual Summer Rotary Book Sale concluded this week, after four days of sales.

The Alexandra Rotary Book sale has been in operation for 33 years, over that time well over half a million dollars has been raised for Rotary projects both in New Zealand and across the globe.

Alexandra Rotary Club President Kevin MacKenzie said the booksale was another success for the Alexandra Rotary Club with “in-excess of $30,000” put through the till.

“The wet weather certainly helped,” he said. “Sincere thanks go to all who participated in some way – helping at the sale, setting up and cleaning up and especially the buyers who supported the sale.

“We are very appreciative of all the support.”

Reverend Andrew Howley, who helps with the book sale, said projects cover a wide variety, from supporting the eradication of Polio, gifting of dictionaries in schools, purchasing equipment for Dunstan Hospital, supplying books to the Cook Islands,

The proceeds have also gone towards sponsoring the Dux prize for Dunstan High School, young people’s development through Outward Bound and youth development courses, helping with the rebuild of the Dunstan High School High Ropes course, and supporting numerous individuals in the community.

The Rotary Book Sale raised valuable funds for community organisations.

“The book sale while also raising money for worthwhile causes also allows the reuse of books, diverting these from landfill,” Andrew said. “Many thanks go to all those that donate books for sale.

“While focused on books, a good selection of DVD’s, puzzles, board games and magazines are also offered, all great for a rainy few days in the tent.”

Rev Andrew also said the annual Christmas Dinner was a big success.

Held on Christmas Day, the dinner catered to anyone who wanted a meal.

“Christmas Dinner went well,” he said. “In the end we estimate about 130 people from Alexandra, around New Zealand and across the world attended.”

Alexandra’s Christmas Dinner was attended by over 130 people.

Attendees aged from just under one, to close to 100.

“Overwhelmed once again by peoples generosity in supplying their food, and most importantly, their time and talents to ensure all those that wanted to join together for Christmas could.

“Despite a weather forecast that predicted rain at lunch people had the choice of eating outside and inside St Enoch’s Church.

“It was a very enjoyable and relaxed day.”
