Rediscover the magic of movies at SantalandToday’s the day! Santaland helpers Sian Fiebig, Megan Bailey and Julie Moreton will be opening this Santaland door at 4.30pm sharp.

Lights, camera, action! For the next four days, visitors to Santaland will walk the red carpet, meeting many famed movie characters on the way to visit the real star of the show – Santa.

A group of volunteers in Cromwell has worked throughout the year to create a Christmas display that will delight young and old. This year, Santa is enjoying the fictional world of film – a Tinseltown theme with wonderful twists, turns and quite a few special surprises.

For over 25 years, Santaland has continued to grow and delight young and old each Christmas.

Last year, over 2,600 people visited Santaland, and this year spokesperson Julie Moreton said she expects that number to increase.

It’s just got so big; we get people coming from all over Central Otago and even further afield,” Julie said.

“Sunday is traditionally our biggest day, so we are urging everyone to come Thursday, Friday, Saturday; avoid the queues, don’t leave it till the last minute.”

A special seat is being prepared for the big man himself. Santa will be arriving on his sleigh in time to meet all the children.

The Central App was allowed a sneak peek as the Santa’s Movie Land exhibits were being set up, on the promise to keep it all a secret until the doors open this afternoon.

What we can say is … the real stars are not the ones at the top of the Christmas trees!

Some of the movie-themed displays are interactive, some are for looking at only, some are big, some details are so small you will need to look very carefully for them. All have characters you will know well, and some will simply take your breath away.

The movies featured span the generations.

“You don’t have to have children to come, there’s something here for everyone to enjoy,” Julie said.

Take photos along the path, be involved in the magic.

Can you guess which movie I’m in?

Santa’s room is being made ready for the big man’s arrival, and a parking space has been cleared for his sleigh.

After all the excitement, Thomas the tank engine will provide fun rides, weather permitting of course.

Julie said they always kept the entry price low, so it was affordable for everyone in the community.

“The Santaland volunteers, the toy library, the Presbyterian church and Lions volunteers all work together to create a fun experience for the whole community to enjoy.

“It’s not just about meeting Santa, it’s about a Christmas experience.

“So come early, don’t leave it till the last minute. Take your time and really get the most out of it.”

Megan Bailey agreed.

“If you love the joy of Christmas, you’ll love Santaland.”
