Ready, set, glow at gym prizegivingFun, bright face paint on competitive gymnasts from the Alexandra Gymnastics Club

Alexandra’s competitive gymnasts enthralled whānau and friends with a dazzling neon performance under a black light at Wednesday night’s prizegiving (December 5).

Alexandra Gymnastics Club (AGC) members aged five and older celebrated their achievements from the past year in front of a 150-strong crowd at Molyneux Stadium.

A three minute long floor routine from the competitive squad was a highlight for many attendees. The squad have been learning the routine for the past few weeks, with eight hours of extra practice to nail the timing, tempo and tumbling.

Tricks including backflips, aerials, leaps and dive rolls over other gymnasts were choreographed to Alan Walker’s song ‘Faded’.

Coach Claire Bell said she was proud of the girls who relished the chance to share their skills and inspire other young gymnasts.

Long time club supporters Kerry Earland and Rewa Robinson who have both served for many years coaching and on the committee were acknowledged and thanked for their dedication by club President Lana John.

Watch applause for Rewa and Kerry.

The AGC coaching team led by Claire and Jodi Riwhi and other volunteers were applauded for giving up time to bring gymnastics to the community.

Fifteen gymnasts went home with trophies, including Annabelle Breen for dedication, determination and true sportsmanship; best competitive gymnast to Madeleine John; highest points scored to Lexie Rose; most improved competitive to McKenzi Hamilton and best club member to Bella Donaldson.

Best all round junior went to Kora Smith, and best all round senior to Astyn Sadal. The most improved junior male was won by Kahu Bedggood. A full list of winners can be found on AGC Facebook page.
