Police warn road users of winter road dangers Police warn winter is here and there is ice on local roads.

Otago Police are urging motorists to take extra care this weekend on the region’s potentially icy roads.

Central Otago has already experienced snowfalls down to relatively low levels, with ice occurring on many roads throughout the district.

Road users are warning ice can occur anywhere, with snowfalls unpredictable.

Police Central Otago Area Response Manager Senior Sergeant Clinton Wright says long weekends often bring in visitors and warns road users to be careful, considerate and patient.

“This Queen’s Birthday weekend, like all other long weekends in and around Central Otago and the wider Queenstown Lakes Area, there will be an influx of people driving in and around our roads and highways.

“With the increased volume of traffic expected leading into this weekend, Police would like to remind everyone that driving to the conditions is paramount.

“If the weather is bad and your travel can’t be put off, allow extra time for your journey.

“Plan to drive in the middle of the day or in daylight hours, when visibility is better and ice and snow are less likely to be on the road.

“Avoid driving at night, when hazards rapidly multiply.

“When you’re on a wet, icy, or snowy road, it’s important not to brake suddenly or to accelerate quickly, as you could aquaplane or skid.

Clinton says in these situations, more than ever, driving to the conditions is crucial.

“With the Brass Monkey rally motorcycle event taking place in the Ida Valley this weekend, Otago Police want to remind the participants to be even more careful on two wheels.

“And for other motorists; there will be a large number of motorcycles on the highways, please keep an eye on your surroundings and if passing, double check you mirrors and blind spots.

“Police will be out in force, expect to be stopped for impairment testing. Do not drink and drive.

“We all need to work together to ensure we all get to and from our destinations safely and to have an awesome long weekend.”
