Planning your Central adventureHikers are reminded to use gear lists and tell someone where they are going and when they will be back before setting off

Many Central residents will head outdoors this summer, and the New Zealand Police and Mountain Safety Council New Zealand (MSC) say preparation and planning has been made easier with a newly updated app.

The Mountain Safety Council app Plan My Walk includes information on destinations, track alerts, MetService weather information, gear lists, personalised plan and profile section.

Hikers can use Plan My Walk to search the largest database of public NZ walking tracks to find a trip suitable for their group; view recommended gear lists; and create and share trip plans.

Many people find themselves in situations where they’re underprepared and, especially if the weather turns or they get lost, or find themselves with inadequate protection from the elements.

The free app collates useful information for adventurers exploring Central and New Zealand

The Land Safety Code provides five key steps for enjoying the outdoors safely:

  • Choose the right trip for you - learn about the route and make sure you have the skills for it
  • Understand the weather - check the forecast and change your plans if needed
  • Pack warm clothes and extra food - prepare for bad weather and an unexpected extra night out
  • Share your plans - telling someone your trip details and taking a beacon can save your life
  • Take care of yourself and each other - eat, drink, rest, and stick with your group and make decisions together.
