Volunteer firefighters had an early wake up call responding to a plane on fire in Cromwell this morning.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) said it received a report of a plane on fire at the Cromwell aerodrome about 7am.

Two fire appliances from Cromwell attended and on arrival found a small two-seater plane fully engulfed by the fire, the Fenz shift manager said.

The fire was extinguished quickly with firefighters on the scene for about 40 minutes before leaving the plane “in the hands of the owner’’, he said.

The plane was stationary when the fire started.

A fire investigator was called but did not attend and the matter has been left with the Civil Aviation Authority and the owner.

On Facebook the Alexandra Volunteer Fire Brigade posted it attended the blaze as it was covering for the Cromwell Volunteer Fire Brigade which celebrated its 150th Anniversary last night.
