The Department of Conservation (DOC) has advised that the slip site on the Outlet Track will remain closed to the public until further notice.

A section of the Outlet track has been closed since July 17 after a slip came down on the track, leaving the cliff above the slip unstable and crossing this section of track unsafe.

DOC senior ranger Nicole Sutton said part of the trail which runs beside the Clutha/Mata-Au River had been inundated when the clay bank above it slumped.

DOC staff will not be making track repairs until it is safe for staff to work below the bank that has slumped, she said, adding that DOC will also undertake a geotechnical assessment of the area to ensure public safety.

Signage indicating the closure of the track at the slip site on the Outlet Track is in place at the Outlet Motor Camp and where the Hikuwai Link Track/Outlet Track junction.

People can continue to walk the Outlet Track from either end up to the barrier and signage marking the closed section, turning around at this point and returning the same way, Nicole said.

The shared use Hikuwai Loop Track above the Outlet Track is available for people who wish to walk/bike from the Outlet Motor camp to Gunn Road car park.

Signs and barriers are in place at the slip site to protect people, and anyone interfering with signage or barriers is putting themselves and others at risk, Nicola said.
