Cromwell based NZ Cherry Corp is celebrating one of its own winning an annual trophy at the Summerfruit NZ conference in Queenstown last week (June 7-8).

Stephanie Cavell joined the team in late October 2022 and has displayed commitment to the improvement of the industry through waste minimisation.

Stephanie said she felt like a “ball of unrealness” when she heard her name called out as the winner.

“Generally, I’m the person that works away in the background.”

She has led the NZ Cherry Corp ‘Cherry Rescue Project’ which aims to repurpose cosmetically imperfect cherries that do not make export or local quality standards.

Cherry rescue products created in partnership with other New Zealand businesses encompass food items such as fruit bars, snacks, mueslis and drinks including sodas, ciders and kombucha.

Her contribution earned her the Mack Nicol Cup and a $3,000 prize.

Stephanie said she plans to use the prize to assist with broadening the overseas market for cherry rescue products.

“It was so nice to be nominated… I have great support to do all these cool things.”

Growing up on a kiwifruit orchard in Tauranga, but now living in Wānaka and working in Cromwell she said she loves working in horticulture and being able to give back to the industry.

Mack Nicol is remembered for his expansion of the New Zealand fruit export sector and encouragement of young people entering our industry.

In recognition of Mack’s contributions, Summerfruit NZ and the Summerfruit exporters committee established the Mack Nicol Award for excellence.

Summerfruit NZ is the industry body that represents the interests of over 240 apricot, cherry, nectarine, peach and plum growers.
