Nominations for local musician Anna Van Riel

Hāwea children's songwriter Anna van Riel earned four nominations in the recent Australian Songwriters Association Awards.

Her song, ‘If you were a tree’, was nominated for Best Children’s Song and the musician also earned three more nominations in other categories for her folk and bluegrass work.

The awards ceremony was held on Sunday (May 16) and while Anna did not take an award home, she said she was “stoked on this as they literally have thousands of entries in the whole competition”.

Anna’s song Swamped, from her album Whistle & Hum, made it into the top ten in the folk category.

Anna is currently touring her 1980s inspired environmental rock opera for kids and families called Waste Free Wanda.

“Since launching it in February last year I've reached over 10,000 kids and adults and am about to hit the ‘deep south’ at the end of the month for another tour,” Anna said.

“The focus of the show is to teach audiences how to make 'simple swaps' in their lives to help reduce single use waste,” she said. “It has been a huge success so far, and I'm really excited to develop it more by adding creative and educational workshops that audiences can get involved in.”
