Dunstan High School (DHS) is making changes: a new uniform for year nines, a new timetable and changes to the tutor system.

Principal Reece Goldsmith said the year has started positively.

“We are pleased with our 2022 NCEA results and have welcomed 140 new students and five new staff, all who will be great additions to Dunstan.”

The number of students is slightly up on last year, with 577 on the roll.

Reece said changes mean there’s a lot for staff and students to get their heads around.

“Early on, it is [crucial] that all our students feel safe and secure…term one is important in ensuring expectations are clear and a focus on learning is prioritised.

“Because our students are so busy with camps, house events and various service, sports  and cultural activities, it is always a challenge in ensuring these important events do not detract from students learning in the classroom.”

Reece said the school community is excited to see the A Block refurbishment is on track for completion in time for term two.

“This will also be a relief as currently we are five classes down so rooming is a bit tight this term.

“Whānau Ora time is replacing the tutor system, this is our second year of our year nine and ten semester half year courses.”

Reece said DHS is continuing to develop work experience, financial capability and project based learning courses - all relatively recent introductions to the school.

“With changes to NCEA on the way, all our courses will change to meet the new requirements, which are currently a work in progress at a national level.”

Three new teachers are on board; Delint Ngaue (food and nutrition), Greer Donovan (science), and Vai Tuhoe (design and visual communication).

DHS is yet to appoint a deputy principal and head of physical education.
