A local grandfather and his team have mounted a kid’s motorbike and delivered it to their neighbours at early childhood centre BestStart Alexandra, bringing joy and pride to the children.
Davidson Honda owner Bruce Davidson said they had been thinking about converting the old bike “as a bit of a winter project last year,” but they didn't have the time to do it until now.
After a couple of days of effort, with everyone in the team providing input and the mechanical know how of one of their engineers, the bike was mounted and then delivered.
“Our neighbours, the kids, are always looking over the fence and having a bit of a yarn. I’ve got a couple of grandies there as well.
“Their eyes just lit up… and I know they’re using it.”

Early childhood teacher Jenn Wisely said the motorbike has enhanced the outdoor play area.
“It’s given our tamariki something to be really proud of in the playground, and to share with whānau.”
As well as a sense of pride the other outcome has been teaching sharing and fostering tuākana-tēina (the relationship between older and younger children).
“Even if no one is playing on it, when they walk in in the morning, you’ll see them touching it… it’s really lifted their mana for the centre.”
This is the second donated toy, the first was a converted jetski arranged by Bruce a few years ago.

The Central App asked what motivated him and he said it was about “lending a helping hand when you can” to your neighbours and hardworking organisations such as kindergartens and early childhood centres.
