Mayor’s column: Alpine Fault under the spotlight

"Knowledge is power" as the saying goes, and when things go pear-shaped, knowledge can save our lives.

That's why I am really encouraging people to attend the AF8 Roadshow being held at the Cromwell Presbyterian Church at 6.30 on Tuesday March 28.

I have had the privilege of hearing the speakers that will be in attendance through being mayor and I cannot recommend highly enough that you do the same.

Unfortunately, it is a fact of life living here that there is a fairly good chance of the Alpine Fault ripping sometime in the not too distant future and we all need to know what we can expect and what we should do if we are here when it happens.

The roadshow has science providing the foundation for community discussions supported by local emergency management and communication experts.

As I say, I have seen the presentation and found it invaluable in getting my own head around what the implications are of if/when the fault goes.

So please, if you can, put this date in your diary/phone and head along to get ready.
