Maniototo Library is entering a new chapter as it trials the concept of late nights.

The extended hours take place each Thursday from 6pm to 7pm as a way of providing the service to as many people as possible.

Central Otago District Council group manager community experience David Scoones said the extended library hours, which began on November 2, is a trial to see how it works for people and would be assessed in due course.

“It is all about making the library as accessible as possible to people who might not be able to get there during the day,” he said.

The library, which is run through the Central Otago District Council, moved into its new premise just over a year ago, which was part of the Maniototo Area School’s new build.

The library's usual hours of Monday to Friday, 11am to 4pm, remain the same.

Maniototo Library is one of seven in the Central Otago district, with the remaining six in Alexandra, Clyde, Cromwell, Millers Flat, Omakau and Roxburgh.

Membership is free to permanent residents and ratepayers.
